New tennis coach demands hard work in practice and focuses on league playoffs

Girls’ tennis has started off the 2015-2016 season with a 4-1 record and a 2-0 record in league play.

The Wolverines won their season opener against Santa Monica High School by a score of 13-5. They followed that with another victory, this time against Palos Verdes and with a 15-3 victory, only losing three games. They then contiuned their winning streak against Marymount with a 15-3 win and against a league match against Notre Dame High School with a 13-5 win.

Their single loss came in an away match against Peninsula High School on Sept. 24, in which they lost the match 13-5.

“I think we were all very happy with how we competed against Peninsula,” Jenna Moustafa ’17 said. “We supported each other a lot and had a lot of close matches. We were also able to do a lot better than we did last year. Hopefully the next time we play them we can do even better than this meeting, too.”

They responded positively from this loss with a win in their Mission League opener against Marymount with a 15-3 victory and a 13-5 victory against rival Notre Dame.

“I feel that we’ve been able to capture those wins because of our hard work during practices,” Jennifer Gadalov ’19 said. “All of us are giving our full effort in practices and it seems to be paying off.”

The coaching staff and players have also worked together quite well, according to juinor standout Moustafa.

“Our team is much more close-knit than in previous years, and we have more experienced players starting on the team, which will help out in matches,” Moustafa said. “All the coaches are really enthusiastic about working with us.”

The team has been practicing hard, according to Gadalov, who notes the team’s growth.

“We’re all constantly improving during practices with the help of our amazing coaches,” Gadalov said. “Overall, everybody has been playing really well during practices and matches, and we hope to continue this streak.”

The team maintains high hopes for the results of rest of their season.

“Our goal hasn’t changed,” Gadalov said. “We still want to go far and win the championships.”

The team heads into their next league game against Marlborough Oct. 6 at the Los Angeles Tennis Club looking to keep their strong start alive.

There are three more Mission League matches, against Louisville, Marlborough and Marymount. If they qualify, Mission League playoffs begin Nov. 2, with the finals later that week on Nov. 5.
