Wolverines fall in season opener

The Wolverines lost to the Loyola Cubs 34-0 Aug 28 in each team’s first game of the season. Starting Quarterback Marshal Cohen ’16 was injured during the first quarter of the game on a run play. Cohen, coming off of ACL surgery during his sophomore season will have an MRI on Monday. He was replaced by backup Noah Rothman ’16 who appears to be the starter heading forward.

The team came into the game as clear underdogs, but after a surprisingly strong effort from the defense in the second half, the squad allowed only three points in the final two quarters. However it was too little too late for the Wolverines as Loyola running back, Drake Beasley Jr. ’17, scored four touchdowns in the first half. Both turnovers and penalties plagued the Wolverine offense all night, as it had no opportunity to get into a rhythm after Cohen got hurt.

Although the Wolverines dropped their home opener, several players and Head Coach Scot Ruggles took away many positives for the underclassmen. Both Loyal Terry ’19 and Thomas Glover ’18 shone in their first varsity game, playing running back against the 17th ranked team in the state.

The Wolverines will look to avenge their loss to Loyola in next week’s game against the Jefferson Democrats at Ted Slavin Field.
