After a disappointing loss to Taft last week, the Wolverines came out against Westchester with a chip on their shoulder. The Wolverines ended up defeating the Comets 49-26.

Harvard-Westlake’s defense gave up a touchdown to Westchester on the third play of the game; however, the play was called back on a penalty, which allowed the Wolverines to force a punt.

Following a few empty possessions by both teams, including a questionable decision by Head Coach Scot Ruggles to elect to go for it on fourth and goal from the 15.

After not converting deep in Comets’ territory, the Wolverines sacked Westchester’s quarterback Jonathan Murphy ’18 in the end zone causing a safety.

Noah Rothman ’16 ran for a touchdown on a read option at the end of the first quarter, putting the Wolverines up 8-0 after a botched extra point.

The Wolverines scored two more touchdowns in the second quarter before allowing a Comets’ touchdown with under two minutes left before the half.

Harvard-Westlake consistently moved the ball throughout the second half, but could not put away the Comets until the very end. Dietrich Tribull ’16 intercepted a Westchester screen pass with five minutes left in the game to seal a victory for the Wolverines.

“We played well tonight for parts of the game, but we need to use our non-league film to help us improve entering league play,” Defensive Lineman Daniel Mosch ’16 said.

Harvard-Westlake will have a bye week before beginning Angelus League play Oct. 9 at St. Paul.
